The IMO’s previous goal was a 50 percent reduction by 2050 in comparison with 2008 levels. Hedging its bets, the industry is exploring ammonia, batteries, and hydrogen, among other options for powering ships. One is a thorium-fueled molten-salt reactor. The reactors would be small, modular units.

High temperature heat for biomass gasification is obtained from a molten-salt system in a solar concentrating tower. Hydrogen for reverse water gas shift reaction to avoid producing CO 2 during the process is produced by electrolyzing water, driven by solar power. In comparison, cropland today covers 1.5 billion ha.
