Instead, crop-based ethanol has been promoted by the federal government (through tax incentives) as the transition fuel towards cellulosic bio-fuel production. A bridging option is to use methanol derived from natural gas, with a CO2 intensity that is no worse than conventional fuels. It is a safe fuel.
