It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

We will get to how it all works in a moment, but the short version is that, while you still get a petrol engine with your electric motors, the former is only used to recharge the battery or deliver power to the motors — it never actually drives the wheels — giving you what Nissan calls an “EV-like” drive experience, and improved fuel efficiency.

The vehicles run on lithium ion batteries which, using specialist, high-power charging equipment, can be can be fast charged in less than fifteen minutes. When theyre ready, they will be sold to companies who want to be seen promoting green technology. And you can use the sockets you have at home to charge, without a problem.

Its short overhangs, “one-bow line” profile and stretched wheelbase take some getting used to, while a strange shut line from the A-pillar – part of a sealed bonnet – and external flap to re-fill the windscreen washer reservoir don’t help. Its EQ owners simply weren’t using it very much, apparently.

It’s mind-blowing, if not quite in the re-wire brain territory of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Very cool and ideal to charge phones, your laptop, coffee machine, widescreen TV or even bar fridge. The 50kW charger near my home is (still, after three months) out of service, awaiting replacement parts. That’s daft acceleration.
