Tesla Model 3 587km: Mercedes-AMG EQS53, $324,800 Rapid, high-priced AMG limo uses huge 107.8kWh battery for its 587km range, but fully exploit the EQS53’s 484kW and 950Nm and possible distance will quickly tumble. Not cheap, but a 95kWh battery, 446km range and 150kW DC fast charging are wins. 2023 Cupra Born.

Alfa Romeo Tonale – the Italian brand finally has a rechargeable car in its ranks in the form of the Tonale PHEV compact SUV. Audi e-Tron GT – the BEV guts of the regular e-Tron (also shared with Porsche’s Taycan) in a coupe-inspired four-door body. Look out Porsche Macan! Expect to see it Down Under in 2023.

Throw in one of the best sound systems of any new car – that includes Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, etc – and you have a tempting package that plays in the EV sweet spot. The Ioniq 5 is also about half the price of the Porsche, more economical, faster accelerating and almost as quick at ultra-rapid charging.

They’re not going to be cheap. Such prices comfortably eclipse the $121,990 Volvo Australia currently asks for the XC90 Recharge Ultimate PHEV. The brand’s two full EVs already on sale here are the XC40 Recharge from $72,990 and C40 Recharge from $74,990. Will the EX90 sticker price be a charge too far?
