Hydrogen today comes primarily from natural gas, which pumps out a lot of carbon and methane pollution into the atmosphere. Devices aren’t cheap, efficient, or durable enough yet to move out of the lab. . Now Japanese researchers say they’ve made an important step toward durability. But it has proven challenging to do on a large scale.

So far Israel, Denmark, Australia , Hawaii and California’s Bay Area have plans to implement the Better Place model. So, the used batteries are almost arbitrarily cheap since an arbitrarily large fraction of their cost of production can be loaded on their use in transportation.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Shai Agassi predicts that Israel will have over 100,000 electric vehicles in use by 2010.
