Hyundai is set to embark on an experiment that will see it radically slash the cost of its cheapest EV in Europe when its new Hyundai Casper arrives before the end of this year. To ensure the Casper SUV succeeds, Hyundai hasn’t simply binned its petrol 1.0-litre litre and slotted in a battery-electric powertrain.

It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions.

Recent developments in lithium ion batteries, and the consequential range improvements of EVs has significantly dampened enthusiasm for hydrogen fuel cells. The electron flow goes via the car’s lithium-ion battery, in essence keeping it charged, and recombines with the protons and oxygen at the cathode.

The vehicles run on lithium ion batteries which, using specialist, high-power charging equipment, can be can be fast charged in less than fifteen minutes. The cost of ownership for EVs is still quite high. The cost of batteries is not a problem when this is organized in the right way.
