The US Cash for Clunkers scheme ran out of cash on Tuesday with 690,114 dealer transactions submitted. So after the UK’s vehicle scrappage scheme was hailed a success, what of the so-called “cash for clunkers&# programme in the US? Even though corporate purchases of vehicle fleets continued to drop, the number of retail sales of Ford cars and pick-up trucks among the public leapt by nine per cent.

The US car scrappage scheme know as the ‘cash for clunkers’ plan will end next week after the funds ran out. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced on Thursday that after a successful run, the cash for clunkers program will come to a close on Monday, August 24th at 8 p.m.
