Toyota said today it would recall some 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrid cars in the U.S. due to a potentially faulty brake-pressure accumulator. The component, said the company, may develop an internal crack due to metal fatigue caused by vibrations over the course of the vehicle life.

Toyota currently sells more than 10 hybrids, including dedicated models such as the Prius, Sai and Lexus HS 250h. Toyota plans to boost production of these existing vehicles in addition to launching new hybrid minivans, subcompacts and luxury cars, according to the report.

has received about 1,500 preorders for its Lexus HS hybrid car ( earlier post ) in Japan, roughly three times more than the firm’s monthly sales target. Meanwhile, Toyota’s new Prius hybrid, released in May, has been selling extremely well. The 2010 Lexus HS 250h will be available in the US later this summer.

Toyota launched of the Prius in late 1997 in the Japan market, and in the US in July 2000. The first-generation US Prius was a low-volume vehicle (12,000 produced annually). The second-generation Prius launched in the fall of 2003 as a 2004 model year. million Prius sold worldwide.

Last month, I drove the Lexus HS 250h for one week, and this week, I'm test driving the third-gen Toyota Prius. When I sat inside, my first thought was: boy, I wish they had given me the Prius first, then the Lexus. Not that the Prius isn't a great little car. It's just not a luxury car.

Just two weeks ago, the Fusion was awarded Motor Trend's golden calipers as the 2010 Car of the Year, beating out the Honda Insight, the Lexus HS 250h, and the Toyota Prius, among numerous others. Now Car and Driver has followed suit, recognizing the Fusion.
