It's the only compact car from the luxury brand, now that it has quietly killed the disappointing HS 250h hybrid sedan after three years on the market and very few sales. The 2013 Lexus CT 200h may be in its third model year now, but it remains the only occupant of its particular niche: the luxury compact hybrid hatchback.

Toyota currently sells more than 10 hybrids, including dedicated models such as the Prius, Sai and Lexus HS 250h. Toyota plans to boost production of these existing vehicles in addition to launching new hybrid minivans, subcompacts and luxury cars, according to the report.

Just two weeks ago, the Fusion was awarded Motor Trend's golden calipers as the 2010 Car of the Year, beating out the Honda Insight, the Lexus HS 250h, and the Toyota Prius, among numerous others. Now Car and Driver has followed suit, recognizing the Fusion.

Last month, I drove the Lexus HS 250h for one week, and this week, I'm test driving the third-gen Toyota Prius. Not that the Prius isn't a great little car. It's just not a luxury car. When I sat inside, my first thought was: boy, I wish they had given me the Prius first, then the Lexus.
