The Energy Department (DOE) recently announced $10 million, subject to appropriations, to support the launch of the HydroGEN Advanced Water Splitting Materials Consortium ( HydroGEN ). Currently, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) funds research and development of low-carbon hydrogen production pathways.

Specifically, low cost and energy-efficient processes are sought that can be demonstrated and validated under field conditions to meet needs of the nascent algal biomass industry. Algae cultures tend to be relatively dilute, and the energy requirement to remove water from the cultures can be a significant portion of the energy balance.

The impetus for this change came from a study by the US Idaho National Lab [ 2 ]. Some examples are the use of fiberglass, carbon fiber and Kevlar substituting for wood and metal in vehicle parts, appliances and furniture products. The convenience and low cost of this concept alone merit attention.
