Earlier this year, new CAFE standards require an industry-wide fleet average of approximately 49 mpg for passenger cars and light trucks in model year 2026. To address those issues, states must consider adjusting the existing fuel tax rate to account for greater efficiency and fewer miles traveled. A second consideration is weight.
