Scout Motors, the recently formed independent company backed by Volkswagen Group ( earlier post , is establishing its first manufacturing plant near Columbia, South Carolina, where it will build electric next-generation trucks and rugged SUVs harkening back to the iconic Scout vehicles produced from 1960 to 1980.

The EV division of Volkswagen’s Scout Motors brand officially announced that its first electric vehicle would be a $40,000 SUV. The all-electric Scout SUV will be built in a new $2 billion factory in South Carolina. Volkswagen did not elaborate more on its upcoming $40k electric SUV under the Scout name.

Scout CEO Scott Keogh recently shared that the first all-electric Scout SUV mules are expected to debut by the third quarter of 2024. “The design of the product is, I would say, 85, 90, 95 percent of the way there. Proportions readily dialed in, exterior design dialed in,” Scout CEO Keogh told Automotive News.

Scout aims to build a new Research and Development (R&D) Center in suburban Detroit, which is expected to create 200 jobs in the area. Scout Motor’s R&D Center in Detroit and its new factory in South Carolina will open simultaneously in 2026. Scout will launch an all-electric SUV in the United States market.
