Under the new Global Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles (ZE-MHDVs), Austria, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay and Wales are setting an interim goal of 30% zero-emission new vehicle sales by 2030.

GFEI was launched in 2009 as a partnership of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Transport Forum (ITF) and FIA Foundation. To consider the role of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and electric vehicles and build them into the targets. 2012 is therefore a very important year.

It has also contributed to environment degradation, landscape damage and soil contamination, groundwater depletion and pollution.

Our 2020 study , published in Nature Climate Change , found that manufacturing a typical EV sold in the United States in 2018 emitted about 7 to 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide, compared with about 5 to 6 tonnes for a gasoline-fueled vehicle. An EV operated in Yunnan emits about 60 percent less.
