Let me be clear: GM remains committed to eliminating tailpipe emissions from our light-duty vehicles by 2035. But it wasn’t making oodles of cash per vehicle like the company’s larger pickups and SUVs had been. However, Buick sales figures have clearly been trending in the wrong direction since roughly 2015.

Sales of General Motors crossovers and trucks, which include pickups, vans and SUVs, surged by double-digits in July, pushing combined sales for the year to 1,048,114 through July. Large non-luxury SUVs were up 25% in July, and they are up 15% year to date. Including the Cadillac Escalade, SUV sales are up 32%.

GM and its joint ventures are launching 17 new and upgraded models in China this year, including the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback; the new Wuling Sunshine; two new Jiefang light-duty trucks, the S230 and F330; and the Insignia Sports Tourer, Zafira Tourer and Astra GTC from Opel. By 2015, GM anticipates having about 5,100 dealers nationwide.
