Hyundai presents Kona Electric crossover and NEXO fuel cell SUV

It joins Hyundai’s successful new Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe in a full line-up of Hyundai crossovers for the US market. Kona Electric features a 150 kW (201 horsepower) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery system is liquid-cooled and operates at 356 volts.

If it is cold outside or the battery charge is low, then the engine kicks-in, as it does under heavy acceleration (unless you’re in EV Now mode as explained below). The regeneration on the Escape PHEV replenishes the battery when slowing or braking and is what contributed to that excellent all-electric range.
