It joins Hyundai’s successful new Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe in a full line-up of Hyundai crossovers for the US market. Kona Electric features a 150 kW (201 horsepower) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery system is liquid-cooled and operates at 356 volts.

The Niro isn’t plugged in to recharge the battery but does have a very efficient regenerative charging system that converts kinetic energy into electric energy, when applying the brakes or coasting, and stores it in the battery. Where the Niro comes up a bit short is on the highway where road imperfections can be felt.

kWh battery is charged, there is no sound upon pressing the start button as the Escape PHEV defaults to electric mode. If it is cold outside or the battery charge is low, then the engine kicks-in, as it does under heavy acceleration (unless you’re in EV Now mode as explained below). EV Charge mode charges the battery while driving.

We twice topped-off the battery and were able to first go 39 and then 41 miles on pure electricity. The regeneration on the Escape PHEV replenishes the battery when slowing or braking and is what contributed to that excellent all-electric range. EV Charge mode charges the battery while driving, generating electric-only miles.
