The 17 designs range from systems using on-board hydrogen fuel cells to full battery-electric vehicles. Students were encouraged to explore a variety of solutions including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell, electric, and extended range electric vehicles. All of the designs use lithium-ion battery technology.

University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). While each of the 17 EcoCAR designs is unique, the common attributes include: Li-ion battery technology.
