Cummins has successfully demonstrated a tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in a hybrid-configured auxiliary power unit (APU) configured to power a Class 7/8 truck’s hotel loads while running on commercial ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel. The hybrid power electronics provide dynamic load sharing between the SOFC and a battery pack.

The city has provided incentives for the purchase of both EVs and charging ports, the installation of heat-pump water heaters , and the installation of solar and battery-storage systems. Converting a gas appliance to a heat pump, for example, would draw 4 to 6 kW, while an L2 charger for EVs would be 12 to 14 kW.

Afterward several members of Congress went outside for test drives in a plug-in hybrid brought to Washington by Cal-Cars. On the state level, Minnesota became the first state in the Union to pass plug-in hybrid legislation.
