VW, Daimler subsidiary Daug and Varta developed a NimH battery in the early 90s, and the VW group put the Audi duo hybrid on the road in 1997. First is the energy capacity and the recharge time of current batteries, which now are “ simply inappropriate ” for pure electric propulsion.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the Prius v uses two high-output motors, one 60 kW (80 hp) unit that mainly works to power the compact, lightweight transaxle and another smaller motor that mainly works as the electric power source. In Power mode, enhanced mid-range response enables easier coping with slopes and mountainous terrain.

The G-Wiz, made in India, now offers a lithium-ion battery option that extendsits driving range from 48 to 75 miles – but doubles the price.

A chemist and government researcher, Wang raised some $300,000 from relatives, rented about 2,000 square meters of space, and set out to manufacture rechargeable batteries to compete with imports from Sony and Sanyo. By about 2000, BYD had become one of the worlds largest manufacturers of cellphone batteries.
