Late to the party on EV incentives and decent charging infrastructure, only in the past two years have EV sales really made a dent in the Australian market. Cheapest is a 2011 version with 48,800km, but the owner admits battery health is close to 50 per cent, its dash shows a range of 90km and real world range is closer to 68km.

Similar in size to a BMW X1, this GV60 Lux unquestionably bubbles over with fancy features and prestige finishes, and offers a level of exclusivity so absent with the now ubiquitous (but far cheaper) Tesla Model Y. Range is 470km (WLTP) thanks to its 77.4kW battery. Not what we’ve come to expect from dedicated EV-platform cars.

Chief rivals are the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV , as the prestige German EV stoush bubbles along nicely. Until the cheaper Q8 50 e-tron lands, the Q8 55 e-tron’s a costlier proposition than the BMW iX (from $130,900) and Benz EQE (from $134,900). Standard kit is generous. A monster of a battery, that’s what.

The cheapest 2024 Polestar 2 available is a Standard Range Single Motor – with 200kW/490Nm, 69kWh battery and 546km range – costing $67,400 plus on-roads, before any incentives. Boon for buyers of the new RWD Long Range is its larger battery can charge up to 205kW rather than the entry-level’s 135kW.
