The main reason is access to power. Could it use batteries instead, at least one per sensor node? Pause for a moment to look at the smoke detector in the room where you're sitting and think about the last time you changed its battery. Sensors that mount on buildings can just plug into a wall outlet. Kind of a pain, wasn't it?
