The US government’s General Services Administration (GSA) this summer took delivery of the first of more than 5,600 hybrid vehicles ordered earlier this year, and will make the vehicles—almost all of which are Ford Fusion hybrids—available to various federal agencies under GSA lease agreements as they are delivered.

GM's vehicle is eminently buildable today, as it relies on two energy sources that are available: grid electricity and gasoline. In place of a small gasoline generator, it relies on a hydrogen fuel cell to generate the electricity once the grid-charged Lithium batteries are depleted. The times they are a changin'.

Its 42-mile EV range, its 600-mile total range and relatively low price tag have made the PHEV an instant smash hit.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. We'll also be taking Burning Man art projects off petroleum generators by switching them to solar electricity. Google Guys Th!nk

In addition to the debut of the 2011 Sonata Hybrid ( earlier post ), Hyundai unveiled its first four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (GDI) engine with the Sonata 2.0T product initiative (seven new models in the next 24 months), four nameplates will be available with GDI or the combination of GDI and a turbocharger.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010.
