Electricity flows through some four hundred cells, which are connected both serially and in parallel. Each individual cell has a current of roughly 4 volts. Controlled by the battery management system, this all amounts to the 800-volt battery. Rather than installing heavy batteries, Porsche is opting for fast charging.

It is alarming to see comparisons of the Chevrolet Volt PHEV with battery electric cars when the comparison focuses only on the electric range and ignores the other important differences. The 2900 miles traveled by the Volt, drawing upon its combustion engine, produced far less CO 2 since the Volt uses a small and more efficient engine.

Continuously variable transmission: commonly uses V-shaped pulleys connected by a metal belt rather than gears to provide ratios for operation. A second, more powerful motor/generator is permanently connected to the vehicle’s final drive and always turns with the wheels. These technologies are covered separately in the EPA RIA.
