Mild hybrids, which are typically found in 48 volt electric systems, do not require a plug to operate. Instead, the batteries are recharged using a combination of gasoline engine power and energy collected during braking (also known as regenerative braking). High government taxes on hybrid cars are the primary cause of high pricing.

First was to introduce the second generation Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car (which gets tossed in with plug-in hybrids even though its system really takes a different approach). Volvo and its sister company Polestar has just started selling its EVs. Volvo and Polestar have indicated more plug-in models will follow.

Automobile pollutants are one of the largest contributors to climate changing emissions. The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet.

At the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) conference in March, I spoke with a Nissan dealer from Fairbanks, Alaska who mentioned that many residents there do not have garages and that EVs and even regular hybrids were a huge challenge due to the extreme cold winters.
