A hybrid vehicle is powered by at least one electric motor and a gasoline engine, and its system recovers energy through regenerative braking. Mild hybrids, which are typically found in 48 volt electric systems, do not require a plug to operate. A few luxury carmakers, such as Volvo and Audi, are also offering the technology.

At the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) conference in March, I spoke with a Nissan dealer from Fairbanks, Alaska who mentioned that many residents there do not have garages and that EVs and even regular hybrids were a huge challenge due to the extreme cold winters.
