Automobile pollutants are one of the largest contributors to climate changing emissions. The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet.

This will allow the vehicles to operate on emissions-free battery power, reducing the amount of fuel utilized and significantly decreasing the release of harmful pollutants, including greenhouse gases. Since the utility grid has lower demand during overnight hours, the recharging of plug-ins would not add to the peak load.

As a comparison , in 2011, there were only two battery electric and 29 hybrid electric vehicle models offered for sale in the US. There are three main electric vehicle drivetrain designs that an EV manufacturer can choose to pursue: battery powered , hybrid , and or fuel cell. Modify ICE or Go EV?
