Volkswagen is unveiling the Tiguan GTE Active Concept plug-in hybrid at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). If the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear electric motor powers the car by itself, while the TSI engine and the front electric motor are decoupled from the drivetrain and shut off to save energy.

Volkswagen is unveiling a five-seater Cross Coupe GTE plug-in hybrid at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as a preview to its new seven-seater mid-size SUV due to enter production at the end of 2016. The car has five operating modes: E-Mode, GTE, Hybrid, Off-road and Battery Hold/Battery Charge.

Finally, in a first-of-its-kind partnership in the United States, Mitsubishi announced a strategic alliance with Oregon to develop an electric car charging infrastructure in the state. The big problems now is how to create a battery that can charge rapidly and infrastructure to charge them. If you charge with solar, is way less.

Lutz, who retired earlier this year, called the car Detroits "moon shot" and an attempt to wrest the mantle of innovation back from the Japanese. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
