As the costs of climate change and the price of oil both become too high to bear, auto manufacturers will shift more of their vehicle fleets to electric. As it stands, the power grid is already run-down and outdated , built for the electric loads of a century ago, not for modern life. They do this almost by serving as batteries.

And in a true smart grid, electric cars will not only be able to draw on electricity to run their motors, they will also be able to do the reverse: send electricity stored in their batteries back into the grid when it is needed. In effect, cars would be acting like tiny power stations. We will own the battery.
