If you just set aside the fantasy goal of an electric car with the same or better performance than an ICE powered car then we could build utilitarian short range EVs now, and could have been doing this coninually since 1900 with lead-acid batteries. We have those…they are readily available in our own domestic fleet.

Blending the MPG of SUVs and small cars understates the real consumption and rewards automakers for building gas hogs and unsafe micro cars which makes people want to buy "safe" gas hogs. 80 miles was the range of the EV1 with Lead Acid batteries, that GM tried to use because they wanted the project to fail. check your facts.
