Electricity is a commodity that is bought and sold, and yet unlike most other commodities, it cannot easily be stored. In the 1990s, batteries had far less capacity than they do today, and for the small community of EV users, the prospect of running out of juice and becoming stranded was very real.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Then consider that in order to actually go any farther than the neighbood store, one still had to have ANOTHER car. run the hardware store and buy a new one.
