Here in the UK we’re so downtrodden by extortionate petrol prices that the prospect of driving fuel efficient green cars carries obvious appeal. However, what about our US neighbours where ‘gas’ prices are distinctly lower and so-called muscle cars are seen as almost iconic and part of the culture?

In Germany the credit has enticed customers to buy vehicles such as the Ford Ka, which achieves up to 56mpg, because it is part of a larger government plan that also includes tax based on carbon emissions. With payments of up to $4,500 for motorists willing to swap their ageing gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient ones, it seemed like a ‘can’t lose’ scheme with consumers getting cheaper cars, the automotive industry enjoying more sales and the environment boosted by a reduction in harmful emissions.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. "By partnering with these two industries. People wont buy a full car. They will buy a car and rent or lease the battery and the cost of leasing the battery will be the same as, or less than, the cost theyre paying today for petrol. The target is to come in at the price of a midmarket car.
