The final tally included 14 four-cylinder engines, 11 six-cylinder engines, 10 hybrids (a mix of full and mild—48-volt versions), three plug-in hybrids, seven battery electric vehicles one fuel cell electric vehicle. turbo V6 through the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge battery-electric powertrain. Porsche Taycan 4S BEV.

We recognize that this scoreboard has limited value today due to the small number and randomness of the these 9 EVs currently included, but part of our goal is to shine a light on the general lack of transparency in the auto industry when it comes to US EV sales data. New to the scoreboard in Q3 was the Audi e-tron GT.

The top selling brand has been caught flat-footed in the EV race and in 2023 we will see the arrival of the company’s first battery electric vehicle, the bZ4X. I reckon the Porsche Taycan RWD remains the better EV to drive (despite lacking a bit of shove), but the Hyundai’s the car I’d rather live with.

It’s the first of 23 new battery-electric vehicles the company plans to launch by 2025, under three brands, and they’re targeting total global sales of a million EVs by the end of that year. Hyundai has been selling battery-electric models in the US since the Ioniq Electric was launched alongside hybrid and plug-in hybrid siblings in 2017.
