Tesla is the only production automaker selling a highway capable electric vehicle in North America and Europe, and as such Daimler’s investment will see the company furthering its development of battery-run cars. In 2010 the company will introduce its first battery-powered Mercedes-Benz.

There are currently 16 zero-emission vehicle models available from eight automotive manufacturers; nine run completely on batteries, two on hydrogen fuel cells and five are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that can run on gasoline as well as battery power. As a comparison , in 2011, there were only two battery electric and 29 hybrid electric vehicle models offered for sale in the US. There are three main electric vehicle drivetrain designs that an EV manufacturer can choose to pursue: battery powered , hybrid , and or fuel cell.
