Motor gasoline demand reached a low for any July over the past decade. Consumers aren’t spending, and jobless claims have increased, so it isn’t surprising gasoline demand was down and overall demand slipped a bit. US refinery gasoline production fell for the first time this year, down by 2.3% over July 2010, led by a 15.1%

Despite the overall decline in product deliveries, gasoline deliveries rose a modest 0.8%, and distillate fuel oil deliveries (including diesel fuel) marked their first month in almost two years without a significant dip. Weaker demand was also reflected in declining refinery output, except output of gasoline, which rose 2.8%

In Department of Energy fuel economy tests, in short-trip city driving, a conventional gasoline car’s gas mileage is about 12 percent lower at 20 degrees Fahrenheit than it would be at 77 degrees Fahrenheit and can drop as much as 22 percent for very short trips of around 3 to 4 miles. Charging is much cheaper than gas.
