With new green concepts and production vehicles from at least a dozen manufacturers, consumers have a greater selection of low-emission, high-mileage vehicles to choose from than ever before.

The critical need for government leadership in the emergence of electric vehicles dominated a recent Green Fleet Management discussion in Toronto, hosted by Fleet Challenge Ontario. Whether or not cities, or anyone else for that matter, can afford to buy electric vehicles is a real concern.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai announced plans to offer its next-generation Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle for the US market for $499 per month, including unlimited free hydrogen refueling and At Your Service Valet Maintenance at no extra cost. Also at the LA Auto Show, the new Honda FCEV Concept made its world debut.

The Los Angeles Motor Show may be in full swing, but attention is already turning to the Geneva Motor Show in March, 2010, where Nissan will reveal its new V-Platform technology and an all-new global compact car. It also allows the cars to fit a high specification while remaining affordable.

GM says it is already looking ahead to the next generation of Volt-based vehicles — it unveiled the Cadillac Converj concept in January — and says costs will come down as the technology spreads to more models. They leased a few (at a loss) to those that could afford it. Think of driving any vehicle in the hot Los Angeles summer time.
