The use of compressed or liquefied natural gas as a fuel for vehicles could help to displace oil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but to a limited extent because of the high cost of converting vehicles to use these fuels. Much of this is from unconventional sources, including gas shales.

In Latin America , electric car sales reached almost 90,000 in 2023, with markets in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico leading the region. China exported over 1.2 million in 2023, increasing by 35% relative to 2022.
