In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 This fuel economy is encouraging, but it will take a wide open road with little traffic and lots of patience to equal it. With a fully charged battery, the XC60 Recharge can go 36 miles on pure electricity (speed-limited to about 80 mph) and has a 63 MPGe rating. Very clean.

Running on unleaded premium, the EPA has rated the fuel economy at 19 mpg city/25 highway/21 combined. In 386 miles driving through Southern California, aided by the start/stop (where the engine shuts off when not needed), we averaged 23.7 Using the same 8-speed automatic, the fuel economy is 22 city/28 highway/24 combined.
