The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. The name isn’t its own brand; the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be sold as a model line within the GMC luxury truck brand.

The new EVs are the SF5 and the SF7; the SF5 will be available for pre-order by the end of 2018 and will hit the road in 2019. SF Motors acquired its Indiana factory in 2016; this former AM General plant has a legacy of producing high-end vehicles such as the Hummer H2 and Mercedes R Class, and has been retooled for premium EV production.

The startup carmaker Rivian was founded a decade ago by RJ Scaringe, but it didn’t go public with its electric pickup truck and SUV until the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Rivian quotes acceleration from 0 to 60 mph at about 3 seconds, startling for a truck that weighs 7,000 pounds or more. The trucks acquitted themselves well.
