The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. The name isn’t its own brand; the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be sold as a model line within the GMC luxury truck brand.

The new EVs are the SF5 and the SF7; the SF5 will be available for pre-order by the end of 2018 and will hit the road in 2019. At the top end, the powerful four-motor system will deliver more 1000 hp, meaning vehicles can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds.

The startup carmaker Rivian was founded a decade ago by RJ Scaringe, but it didn’t go public with its electric pickup truck and SUV until the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. A 135 kWh battery pack under the cabin and bed powers four 150 kW (200 hp) electric motors, one per wheel. The two vehicles pretty much stole the show that year.
