Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will launch a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model of the all-new Outlander crossover SUV with a new-generation PHEV system. The Outlander PHEV debuted globally in 2013. Outlander PHEV launched in the US in 2016 as a 2017 model-year vehicle.

CRU forecasts global battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) sales will increase to 42 million vehicles worldwide by 2030. Sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) grew by more than 40% year on year globally in 2016. Battery housing is the biggest volume element of this market.

In February, the leader was the Volvo XC40 PHEV, scoring its second win in a row, this time with 231 units, while its BEV twin was 5th, with 114 registrations, both helping the Swedish SUV to become the 3rd best selling model in the overall market (#1 Ford Fiesta; #2 Kia Picanto), as 59% of the smaller Volvo registrations came from these two.

The next-generation Nissan Frontier midsize pickup truck may get EV and plug-in hybrid variants, the latter using Mitsubishi tech, Automotive News reports. Nissan and Mitsubishi have been corporate allies since 2016, and the current-generation Nissan Rogue and Mitsubishi Outlander crossovers use a common platform.
