The battery pack holds more energy than the 22 kWh pack in BMW’s original i3 electric car that debuted in 2012. When it’s time to stop, the Strike can absorb Level 3 juice at up to 120 kilowatts. That’s closer to a 50 percent recharge than the company’s 60 percent (from 20-to-80 percent) claim.

Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight. On the last day I knew I would have to get a full charge to make it back to Heathrow and leave it with enough juice for the driver who would collect it. I duly plugged it into an exterior household outlet. Even at that young age, John was impressed.

The e-motor also provides regenerative braking to recharge the battery, and there’s an integrated 33 kW (44 hp) starter-generator as well. The e-Save button also toggles to invoke Battery Charge, which recharges the pack using engine power. It’s sandwiched between a 2.0-liter Over five days, we put 276 miles on our test Wrangler 4xe.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. It will appear in Europe next year as the Opel Ampera and in Australia as the Holden Volt in 2012. The car is expected to cost around $40,000.
