Prototype Saturn Vue PHEV plugging in to a Coulomb Chargepoint ( earlier post ) in San Jose, CA. Based on the current restructuring plan, GM is accelerating the wind-down or sale of Saturn to the end of this year. The Volt and plug-in hybrid vehicle are two of 14 hybrid and electric vehicles GM plans to offer by 2012.

GM will have a total of 36 nameplates in 2012, down 25% from 2008 levels. Saturn will remain in operation for the next several years, through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products. If a spin-off or sale does not occur, GM plans to phase out the Saturn brand at the end of the current product lifecycle.

It will appear in Europe next year as the Opel Ampera and in Australia as the Holden Volt in 2012. They only have that many models because they use the same chassis and drivetrain to build 3 different cars, one branded as a Chevy, the next a Pontiac, then a Saturn, etc. By then Volt would be hopelessly obsolete.
