Pike Research forecasts that annual sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) will reach 358,959 vehicles by 2017, representing a compound anual growth rate (CAGR) of 43% between 2011 and 2017. Hawaii, which typically has among the highest gas prices in the nation, will be the top state, with PEVs representing 6.3% FPL Group (Florida).

The proposed amendments, known as LEV III, ask for more stringent tailpipe and greenhouse gas emission standards for new passenger vehicles sold between 2018 and 2025. Americas big gas guzzlers and polluters are not the cars that about half the country drives around. Meanwhile, the Chinese government announced earlier this month that it has adopted a plan to make its country the leading producer of hybrid and all-electric vehicles by 2011, with a goal of producing 500,000 vehicles annually by then.
