At Volkswagen, we are convinced that climate protection and efficient technologies are drivers for economic growth. Volkswagen had already reduced the fuel consumption of its fleet in China, currently including more than 70 models, by 20% between 2005 and 2010. A further reduction of 11% is planned by 2015.

In the transport sector, hydrogen drives can make a significant contribution towards climate protection. With this heat, water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen. The actual water splitting occurs in the second step, which takes place at 800 to 1000 degrees Celsius. The previously reduced material is reoxidized.

The program will reduce emissions fifteen percent below 2005 levels by 2020. These recommendations call for an economy-wide program that would reduce emissions twenty percent below 2005 levels by 2020, and eighty percent below 2005 levels by 2050, though the 2020 target may decrease to eighteen percent if allowance prices increase too much.
