Total combined Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicle sales in the US have topped the one million mark, according to Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA. The second-generation Prius launched in the fall of 2003 as a 2004 model year. Two months later Toyota launched the Highlander Hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV).

It has pushed several hybrid cars in the USA including the Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid, and a number of luxury hybrid vehicles through its Lexus brand. In 2005, it launched the Ford Escape Hybrid – the first hybrid electric SUV. Crucially, Toyota’s success doesn’t revolve solely around the Prius.
