has added 92 hybrid-electric trucks to its delivery fleet by converting standard FedEx delivery trucks to hybrid-electric systems. The hybrid conversions were produced in Charlotte, N.C. FedEx and our suppliers have demonstrated that converted hybrids are a viable, lower-cost option compared to purchasing new hybrids.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

The catalytic converter that keeps the ICE from being a gross polluter in conventional cars and hybrids however, isn't kept warm by the continual embrace of an ever-churning engine in a hybrid with all-electric range. Third-party and DIY converters can't muck with every system on a car. Cold starts mean more pollution.

3Prong Power converts existing Toyota Priuses into plug-in hybrids that can run entirely on electricity. They convert Toyota Prius hybrids into mostly electric vehicles that get 100 to 150 miles per gallon. The conversion can double or even triple fuel economy, thereby severely limiting carbon dioxide emissions.
