China’s National Development and Reform Commission has approved the takeover of Australian coal company Felix Resources Ltd. by the state-owned Yanzhou Coal Mining Co Ltd, China’s fourth-largest coal producer. The remaining Chinese regulatory consent is required from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (“CSRC”).

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. July, 2009 : A NASA satellite study found that Arctic sea ice had thinned dramatically between the winters of 2004 and 2008, with thin seasonal ice replacing thick older ice as the dominant type for the first time on record ( earlier post ). ºC in 2020, and 2.3 ºC in 2050, as compared to 2000 temperatures.

Experts predict that by the year 2060 global warming, if left unchecked, could result in a temperature rise of seven degrees Fahrenheit higher than temperatures before the Industrial Revolution when man started widespread use of coal and other fossil fuels. The Chinese can promise to do this because they’re modernizing their economy.
