I think that’s fair since on a good day my 3 ½-year-old Chevrolet Volt has a 61-mile all-electric range, roughly comparable to a used Nissan Leaf or Fiat 500e. The EV’s homes are as might be expected, in the more populous and wealthier pockets of the San Francisco Bay Area and sprawling Los Angeles region stretching down to San Diego.

The federal tax credit is $7,500, and here in California, we’ll probably get another $5,000 off state taxes. Several other states are considering additional tax credits : Texas, Florida, Oregon and Washington, to name a few. The first cars will be available next fall, about the time of the Chevy Volt debut.

kW onboard charger can charge at 400 volts, but can also go up-to 800 volts, or 350 kW. This 800-volt technology is currently only shared by the Porsche Taycan, but will soon be available on many EVs. The Ioniq 5 qualifies for the federal $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit as does the Mustang Mach-E.
