The luxury Lexus LS 600h L hybrid is the worst offender. It comes with more than $17,000 in forced features compared with the conventional, base model Lexus LS 460L. Ford, General Motors, Honda and Toyota all sell models with high hybrid value ratings, UCS noted. It comes with $1,600 worth of forced features.

Lexus has brought its Hybrid Bicycle concept, first introduced at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, to the UK, in conjunction with the announcement of Lexus’ title sponsorship of the Great British Bike Ride, a four-day charity fun ride that will see hundreds of cyclists following a course from Land’s End to the home of English rugby at Twickenham.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has cumulatively sold more than 2 million hybrid vehicles since the launch in 1997 in Japan of the Coaster Hybrid EV in August and the Prius in December. Lexus remains the only premium brand in Europe to offer three full hybrids as part of its range: the GS 450h, the LS 600h and the newly-launched RX 450h.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced it is to begin a new recall of vehicles including some models of a Lexus hybrid. Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) reported September sales of 126,015 vehicles, a decrease of 12.6% The Lexus Rx hybrid posted 1,168 units, up 57% year-on-year; the GS hybrid posted 38 units, up 31% year-on-year; and the LS 600h posted 12 units, down 74.5%. Total combined Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicle sales in the US have topped the one million mark, according to Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA. Overall, cumulative worldwide sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids have exceeded 1.7 million vehicles through January of this year.

The LS 600h sold 33 units, a decrease of 68.6%, representing 3.7% of all LS sales. Total LS model sales dropped 52.6% General Motors. Total Rx sales were down 3.5% to 6,520 units. The GS 450h sold 41 units, down 35.9% year-on year, representing 4.6% of GS models sold. Total GS sales were down 39.3% to 898 units.

The GS 450h hybrid posted a 63% drop year-on-year to 27 units, while the LS 600h saw a 57.5% Sales of the conventional GS models were down 63% year-on-year, while sales of conventional LS models were down 47%. General Motors. On the Lexus side, the RX hybrid posted 527 units, down 60.4% from 1,330 units in June 2008.

Using the Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders sales figures, this would equate to over 9,500 owners of low-emission cars that should, given a level playing field, be exempt from the London Congestion Charge. At the end of 2008, there were 13 non-hybrid cars from other manufacturers emitting less than 105g/km of CO2 on the market.
