a Panasonic Group company, began construction on a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in De Soto, KS, following the approval by Panasonic Holdings Corporation Board of Directors. Facility construction is focused on rapidly ramping up manufacture of 2170 cylindrical Li-ion batteries to meet surging domestic EV battery demand.

Equipped with a 120 kW induction motor and a Li-ion battery pack, it has a top speed of up to 50 mph, a range in excess of 100 miles and a payload of up to 16,280 lbs. The trucks will be assembled at the company’s 80,000 square foot plant in Kansas City. Full battery recharge requires 6-8 hours.

Enova is supplying drive systems to Smith Electric Vehicles, and recently announced a major contract with First Auto Works (FAW) in China for hybrid buses. Smith Electric will resume production in its Kansas City, Missouri, facility in mid-summer 2014. The company said that the suspension of production in the fourth quarter of 2013 was in order to transition its supply chain to Tier 1 suppliers, enabling Smith Electric to produce its vehicles at a lower cost.

The basis for the "Spirit of DC" staying over in Arizona through the winter results from the gifting of a state-of-the-art Li-ion battery pack and charger from Delaware Power Systems out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
