Fuel economy for the Recharge is 55 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) when you use electricity and gasoline and drops to 27 mpg when you don’t charge up the battery. The EPA’s green scores on the standard 0-10 scale, where 10 is best, include a 7 for Smog, 7 for MPG the Fuel Economy score and a 9 for CO 2 on Greenhouse Gas score.

In other words, if for some reason the idea of a PHEV Wrangler bothers you, relax. Your combined MPGe is 49, and your gas-only combined MPG is 20. The question I kept asking myself during my loan is this: Does going PHEV make the Wrangler Rubicon better? Yes, you get a plug-in hybrid setup. You don’t need the 4xe.

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Millions of EVs and PHEVs would expand the sale of electricity as an alternative to oil.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. My Honda Civic averages 34+ MPG over a year period. PHEVs/EREVs can fill the gap and provide a cheaper alternative to BEVs until battery prices decline enough to take out the ICE. a gallon , that’s 5.7
